Stakeholder dialogue between business and NGOs on "Recht ohne Grenzen"

On September 26th, the Global Compact Network Switzerland hosted an open dialogue between NGOs and business on the Swiss campaign "Droit sans frontiėres- Recht ohne Grenzen" with 30 participants from Swiss companies, NGOs, business associations, government and academia.

Alliance Sud outlined the objectives of the petition which was submitted to the Swiss Government in June 2012. Referring to the framework on business and human rights by Prof. John Ruggie, where he suggests a smart mix between voluntary and binding measures under the pillar "State Duty to Protect", one of the goals of the campaign is the launch of this discussion in Switzerland.

On behalf of the Global Compact Network Switzerland, UBS and Nestle as well as ICC Switzerland presented how Swiss companies operating internationally have been implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in their operations in the past, in particular by referring to the OECD guidelines for multinational companies and the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact.

The discussion lead by Prof. Christine Kaufmann of the Competence Center for Human Rights at the University of Zurich revealed that focusing on access to remedy could eventually prove to be a counterproductive measure since there seems a risk that the debate will shift from dialogue towards a legal dispute, thereby undermining the option for constructive solutions.

The first event in the format of an open dialogue under the Chatham House Rule was highly appreciated by stakeholders present and shall be continued in the future.
